One summer day in Boston, Massachusetts, a young Christian minister stepped in front of his congregation at the Second Unitarian Church. He’d only been teaching there for two years but was ready to move on. He had become disillusioned—so he resigned from his job, moved, abandoned his hefty family endowment, and set out to pursue his own theology. Years later he would become one of the most recognized and beloved writers in American literature.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an individualist through and through. In 1841, he wrote his most well-known essay, “Self-Reliance.” Within it, Emerson defines individualism as a deep and unshakeable trust in one’s own intuitions. (This is where commands like “Trust thyself” and phrases such as “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” came from.) Ironically, Emerson was in some ways the founder of the self-love movement we’re living in now. When you hear that Instagram influencer tell you that you can change your way of thinking, you can change your reality, that, my friend, isn’t a yoga instructor’s affirmations, it’s Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The main idea in “Self-Reliance” is that the greatest things of value don’t come from outward institutions—they come from within. The essay is also his most comprehensive writing for one of his most repeated themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and instead follow his own instincts:
